Before you can record or play anything you will need to set up your audio preferences. This is needed to tell REAPER which audio device(s) you have, and how you wish to use them. There are differences in how you should do this for a Mac under MacOS and a PC under Windows. It is also advisable to disable System Sounds. For MacOS users, this is done in System Preferences. Windows users should use the Control Panel. Even if you work exclusively with MIDI, you will need to set up audio to enable (for example) metronome sounds and to use synths to play back your MIDI material.
